Nairobi, 28th May 2014:
The Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, and Nestlé Kenya today flagged-off the Kenya Primary School’s under-13 boys soccer team that will represent Kenya at the MILO® Africa Championships to be held on the 30th and 31st May 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria.
The team of 16 boys and four officials were flagged-off at the YMCA grounds (South C, Nairobi) where they have been pitching camp ahead of the Under-13 boys’ tournament in Nigeria.
According to Nestlé Kenya Managing Director, Svetlana Obruchkova, Nestlé through its MILO® brand has committed KSh5Million to cater for the boys’ and officials trip. “This sponsorship will cover their air ticket and visa expenses, accommodation and catering,” she said. “MILO® is a foremost sports development brand which has consistently provided platforms in Kenya Primary School Ball Games to discover and nurture the talents in under-13 pupils and also inculcate healthy values to help them succeed in life.” She added.
This is the third year that Nestlé Kenya through its MILO® brand will be sponsoring a team to the MILO® Africa Championship, after the first one held in South Africa in 2010, which was won by Nigeria and another in 2012, where Ghana hosted and won the competition.
The Kenya team will compete with other under-13 teams from Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa. The MILO® Africa Championship is held once every two years.
“We have had intense training for the last 5 days and the boys are keen to deliver home the MILO® trophy from Nigeria,” said Mr. Ben Awinda, the team’s coach.
The team, which mainly comprises pupils from the Lake region (Nyanza Province) primary schools qualified to represent Kenya after beating 8 other teams from across Kenya, during the finals of the Primary School Ball Games held in Kisumu last month.
“Sport has qualities that set the foundation for a child’s future. It is through participating in sports that they learn discipline, teamwork and perseverance. Sport builds confidence, encourages team work and a belief in oneself,” said Svetlana.
MILO® has been the official sponsor of the Ministry of Education Primary Schools Ball Games since 2009, and last year renewed its support for a further 10 years.
“Our involvement through MILO® in this partnership with the Ministry of Education and Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association reinforces the brand’s commitment in sporting activities. For the last 5 years, our sponsorship has greatly benefited thousands of pupils, giving them the opportunity to exploit their co-curricular talents,” said Svetlana.
The Nigeria hosts are keen to put on a spectacular tournament as they roll out the red carpet for the participating teams with a formal dinner and tournament draw ceremony on May 29th which will be attended by Ministers and top officials of the Nigerian Federal Sports and Education Ministries. The pupils will be treated to a tour of Lagos a day before the games kick off. An impressive trophy and medals await the winners of the MILO® Africa Championship.
